PCM-01 | Spider

The Spider corner motif (PCM 01) is available in Delft blue, manganese, or custom colors upon request. The motif can be applied to plain tiles, decorated tiles, or used entirely on its own to create a subtle and unified design. It fits seamlessly in both traditional and modern interiors. All corner motifs can be paired plain tiles, decorated tiles, or entirely on its own, and can also be applied to any tile in our decorated series.

The photos on this page show the Spider motif painted on our Grey mix base with pinholes. Any enhancements can be added on request to achieve a more aged, antique look. Every tile is hand-painted, ensuring each piece is unique and crafted with care.

Historic design

Recognized as one of the most iconic Delft corner motifs, the Spider has been in use since the 17th century, continuing to feature in tilework today. Its clean, stylized lines and symmetrical form give it a timeless quality. Unlike its variant PCM 02, this motif omits decorative curls, offering a more minimal and refined look.

Tiles with only corner motifs became especially popular around 1900, and the Spider motif remains one of the most enduring choices. It combines historic character with modern versatilit, making it suitable for a wide range of interiors and design styles.

Pinholes in the corners

Pinholes were part of the production process before 1860. The tile was cut out of clay and to keep it steady while cutting it, a wooden board was placed on top of it with two, three or sometimes even four pins entering the clay (and thus the tile). Adding this enhancement creates two of these pinholes in each tile. It contributes to the authentic and imperfect look and feel of the tiles.

Crackled finish

Crazing is a phenomenon that produces a network of fine cracks on the surface of Delft tiles (and other ceramics). It happens over time (decades, if not centuries). This enhancement is really a matter of taste, as many consider it to be part of the antique experience, while others prefer a tile without. If you are looking for an aged and imperfect look, it is very much worth adding it.

  • How can the tiles be cleaned?
Clean tile surfaces with a non-abrasive, mild and PH neutral cleaner. Neutral cleaners are devoid of acids, caustics, harsh fillers, or abrasives that could scratch the surface of the tile.
