PCM-20 | Ox-head

The ox-head corner motif Delft tile (PCM-20) is the most iconic and widely used corner motif in Delft tile history. Its distinctive pattern, resembling the shape of an ox’s head with horns, gives this motif its name. First introduced in the 17th century, it quickly became the most popular corner motif of its time. In the 20th century, it was reintroduced on a large scale, and today, it remains the most opted-for corner motif in Delft tile design.

This motif creates a repeating decorative pattern when multiple tiles are placed together, adding rhythm and structure to tiled surfaces. It can be used on its own, paired with plain tiles, or combined with decorated Delft tiles. Additionally, it can be applied to any tile in our decorated series, offering countless possibilities for customization.

The photos on this page display the ox-head motif without the crackled finish and pinholes, presenting a clean and refined look. These enhancements can, of course, be added for a more aged and authentic appearance. The tiles shown are painted on the grey mix, creating a subtle yet varied background.

Hand-painted craftsmanship
Each tile is carefully hand-painted by skilled artisans, preserving the craftsmanship Delft tiles are known for. The ox-head corner motif is available in traditional Delft blue, manganese, or custom colors on request.

A timeless tradition
The ox-head motif was the most commonly used corner motif in the 17th century, featured on countless original Delft tiles. Its distinctive shape, resembling an ox’s head with horns, made it a recognizable and favored design. This motif saw a major resurgence in the 20th century, when it was reintroduced on a large scale. Today, it remains the most chosen Delft corner motif, making it an excellent choice for both historic restorations and contemporary interiors.

A larger version, PCM-21, is also available for those looking for a slightly bolder interpretation of this classic design.

Pinholes in the corners; pinholes replicate a historical detail from Delft tile production before approximately 1860. These small indentations were originally left by stabilizing pins used in the tile-making process. Adding pinholes enhances the authentic, imperfect character of the tile.

Crackled finish; crazing, or fine surface cracks, naturally develops on antique Delft tiles over time. This effect can be replicated with an optional crackled finish, giving the tiles a gently aged appearance. If a cleaner, more contemporary look is preferred, the crackled finish can be omitted.
