PCM-22 | Ox-head ‘Stylised’

This version of the Ox-head corner motif is available in blue or custom colors upon request. You can pair these tiles with plain tiles, decorated tiles, or entirely on its own. The motif can also be applied to any tile in our decorated series, allowing for broad customization. When placed together, these corner motifs form a continuous, decorative pattern across multiple tiles.

The photos on this page show the Ox-head’ motif painted in blue on our Blue mix base and enhanced with pinholes. Enhancements can be changed or added to suit your preferences. Each tile is hand-painted, ensuring the quality and detail Delft tiles are known for.

Historic design

The Ox-head is one of the most recognisable and widely used corner motifs in Delft tile history. First appearing in the 17th century, the motif is best known for its distinctive horned shape and was commonly used to frame a wide variety of central scenes. This stylised version is an elegant variation of the classic Ox-head. Less commonly seen, it offers a more unique corner motif while maintaining the traditional Delft tile character, making it suitable for both historic restorations and contemporary interiors.

Pinholes in the corners

Pinholes were part of the production process before 1860. The tile was cut out of clay and to keep it steady while cutting it, a wooden board was placed on top of it with two, three or sometimes even four pins entering the clay (and thus the tile). Adding this enhancement creates two of these pinholes in each tile. It contributes to the authentic and imperfect look and feel of the tiles.

Crackled finish

Crazing is a phenomenon that produces a network of fine cracks on the surface of Delft tiles (and other ceramics). It happens over time (decades, if not centuries). This enhancement is really a matter of taste, as many consider it to be part of the antique experience, while others prefer a tile without. If you are looking for an aged and imperfect look, it is very much worth adding it.
