P-5 series – Stars
The P-5 series is based on the 18th century Delft wall tiles known as the Blue Stars. These tiles you see here are painted on our single-tone Poarte-E base, shown with pinholes and no crackled finish. This is the standard configuration, but of course adjustments can be made to fit your specific vision. These tiles are also available in manganese.
9 unique star motifs
The P-5 series is based on the original well-known 18th-century Delft wall tiles often referred to as Blue Stars. These tiles are a great example of Northern Dutch design: clean lines, blue-and-white contrast, and timeless geometry. This hand-painted edition stays true to the originals in both look and feel. The series features 9 different antique star designs. Some are a bit more open, others slightly off-center or tighter in shape, all based on historic examples. Each tile is hand-painted, so no two are exactly the same, small differences in lines and tones give the tiles their charm. When combined, they form a surface that feels calm and harmonious, with just enough variation to keep it visually engaging.
Pinholes in the corners
Pinholes were part of the production process before 1860. The tile was cut out of clay and to keep it steady while cutting it, a wooden board was placed on top of it with two, three or sometimes even four pins entering the clay (and thus the tile). Adding this enhancement creates two of these pinholes in each tile. It contributes to the authentic and imperfect look and feel of the tiles.
Crackled finish
Crazing is a phenomenon that produces a network of fine cracks on the surface of Delft tiles (and other ceramics). It happens over time (decades, if not centuries). This enhancement is really a matter of taste, as many consider it to be part of the antique experience, while others prefer a tile without. If you are looking for an aged and imperfect look, it is very much worth adding it.
