P-27 | Stars

This timeless Delft tile design creates a repeating pattern of stars and circles in manganese. It requires 16 tiles in total to show the full pattern. As the tiles are hand-painted, the pattern leads to a consistent installation, without the static effect of machine made tiles. The tiles are based on 18th and 19th century original Delft tiles.

P-27 series – Stars

These Delft wall tiles are based on original 18th and 19th century reclaimed Delft tiles with the iconic Star motif. They create a highly decorative pattern of stars and circles in manganese.

The photos show the P-27 series painted on shade Ivory-2, without the crackled finish but with pinholes. This is our base configuration, but of course it can be completely fine-tuned to your preferences.

16 tiles to display the full pattern
The Star design is known for its consistent but highly decorative pattern when several tiles are placed next to each other. There are 16 tiles required at least to show the full pattern of stars and circles. As all the tiles are painted by hand, working with the Star tiles leads to a consistent appearance without the static effect of machine made tiles.

Pinholes in the corners; pinholes were part of the production process before 1860. The tile was cut out of clay and to keep it steady while cutting it, a wooden board was placed on top of it with two, three or sometimes even four pins entering the clay (and thus the tile). Adding this enhancement creates two of these pinholes in each tile. It contributes to the authentic and imperfect look and feel of the tiles.

Crackled finish; Crazing is a phenomenon that produces a network of fine cracks on the surface of Delft tiles (and other ceramics). It happens over time (decades, if not centuries). This enhancement is really a matter of taste, as many consider it to be part of the antique experience, while others prefer a tile without. If you are looking for an aged and imperfect look, it is very much worth adding it.

You can buy our tiles by contacting one of our dealers through the 'find a dealer' page.
  • How can the tiles be cleaned?
Clean tile surfaces with a non-abrasive, mild and PH neutral cleaner. Neutral cleaners are devoid of acids, caustics, harsh fillers, or abrasives that could scratch the surface of the tile. Do not use abrasive cleaning pads, steel wool, metal brushes or scouring pads as these may scratch the surface of the glaze. Crackled tiles that will face regular wet use should be sealed after installation and periodically as needed.
